  • 1 tbs fennel seeds
  • 1 ½ tsp whole cloves
  • 3 tsp whole Szechuan peppercorns

5 Spice Powder

Hi Chefs, Myka here 👋

Isn’t it great when you can tell that fall is right around the corner? With the season of pumpkin-flavored treats, crisp apples, and dishes featuring root vegetables here, it’s the perfect time to whip up this 5 Spice Powder. Excellent for recipes like our 5 Spice Mini Apple Pies, this spice blend will give dishes the perfect “fall flavor” you’re looking for.

This recipe is a simple one: first, add your whole star anise pods, cinnamon stick, fennel seeds, whole cloves, and whole Szechuan peppercorns to a dry skillet. Heat over medium until fragrant, taking care not to burn the spices (or else you’ll end up with a bitter flavor).

Then, simply grind to a fine powder, using a blender, spice grinder, or mortar and pestle. Store in an airtight container, and enjoy.
Happy cooking!

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

In a dry skillet, add 6 whole star anise pods, 1 cinnamon stick, 1 tablespoon of fennel seeds, 1 ½ teaspoons of whole cloves and 3 teaspoons of whole Szechuan peppercorns.

Step 2

Heat over medium heat until fragrant, being careful not to burn the spices as they will turn bitter.

Step 3

Transfer the whole spices to a spice grinder, blender or mortar and pestle and process until a fine powder forms.

Step 17

Store in an airtight container until ready to use.
